Gen. Shamseddine Released Pending Investigation in Al-Jadeed TV Case

Acting State Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud released on Thursday Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Shamseddine pending investigation in the case of attacking the al-Jadeed television crew.

"The Criminal Investigation Department listened to Shamseddine's testimony today and he was allowed to leave pending investigation,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

Customs agents on Tuesday assaulted and arrested an al-Jadeed crew near the security agency's headquarters in downtown Beirut, which sparked protests and broad solidarity with the detained journalists.

Following a lawsuit filed by al-Jadeed, the Central Criminal Investigations Department started interrogating the crew under the supervision of Hammoud.

The crew, among them journalist Riyad Qobeissi, were allegedly calling through speaker on acting director of Customs Shafiq Merhi to give them an interview when Shamseddine gave customs members an order to beat and detain them.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Customs Administration issued a statement saying Qobeissi shouted "slogans that insult the Customs Administration and its director general … and this is not the appropriate manner to request an interview.”

nothing will happen to the customs thugs.. they are protected by politicians who benefit from the customs to do their mafia business. hopefully there are still some courageous journalists ready to uncover truths...
