Libya Rebels Take Village in West

Libyan rebels on Sunday took the village of Josh at the foot of the Nafusa mountain range in the west of the country, AFP journalists said.

"We took Josh this morning and are now heading west. Now we're fighting to take Tiji" further down the valley, Juma Brahim, head of the rebel fighters' operational command in the Nafusa region, told AFP.

The AFP team could hear heavy gunfire but was unable to report on the number of casualties, but they saw six ambulances pass with sirens wailing.

The Nafusa region has seen heavy fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi since the insurgents launched a major offensive this month in a drive on the capital Tripoli.

Libyan head Moammar Gadhafi was ousted Sunday after 42 years of rule when rebel forces overtook the capital city of Tripoli. The fallen head remains in hiding as thousands cheer in the streets. Despite remaining pockets of resistance, Gadhafi’s forces crumbled and faded into the shadows.
