Singh: UNIFIL Carrying out Impartial Probe into Border Incident

UNIFIL is carrying out an impartial investigation into the shooting incident between the Lebanese and Israeli troops, spokesman Neeraj Singh said on Wednesday.

“The situation along the Blue Line is calm and under control,” he told pan-Arab daily al-Hayat.

He said that a UNIFIL investigation team held talks with the Lebanese and Israeli armies and launched a probe into the incident.

“Impartial and full investigations are being carried out,” Singh told the newspaper. “We will inform the Lebanese and Israeli sides about their results and we will present our report on the matter to the U.N.”

Israeli and Lebanese troops exchanged fire in the Wazzani area on Monday morning, with the two armies trading accusations on why the shooting happened.

The Israeli military said its troops had been fired on as they worked on the Israeli side of the Blue Line, the U.N.-drawn border with Lebanon.

The Lebanese army said, however, that a soldier opened fire on an Israeli patrol after it crossed into disputed territory.

Why impartial probe? What do we need you for? You should say clearly that the Lebanese Army shot first.
