Jarba Says Hizbullah Pullout from Syria Guarantees End to Internal Discord
Syrian opposition leader Ahmad Jarba has accused Hizbullah of keeping the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad on its feet, urging the new Lebanese government to stop the party's meddling in Syria to end internal discord in Lebanon.
“The regime is dead … but Hizbullah's support leads to the re-injection of the regime so that it gets strong,” Jarba told al-Joumhouria newspaper in an interview published on Wednesday.
“Hizbullah is keeping the regime on its feet,” he said from his residence in Turkey.
The Syrian National Coalition chief wished the government of Prime Minister Tammam Salam success and hoped it would be able to resolve the crisis of the Syrian refugees.
“We don't have an interest in keeping the Syrians in Lebanon,” he told the daily. “Every Syrian in (the northern city of) Tripoli or the (eastern) Bekaa (valley) wants to return home.”
The opposition chief extended his hand to the Lebanese cabinet to protect the Syrians, and “play a positive role in resolving the Syrian crisis and stopping Hizbullah's interference in the affairs of Syrians.”
“That alone would stop internal strife in Lebanon,” he said.
Jarba also hoped that the government would not resort to harmful policies against Syrian activists.
“We are keen on respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and army,” he said.
