U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain Le Roy has ruled out Hizbullah allegations that its ownership of weapons has increased fivefold.

During his final press conference in New York, Le Roy said that Hizbullah is probably better organized but he ruled out that it owns fivefold of weapons it used to own before.

Asked about the latest clash between Lebanese and Israeli troops in the area of the Wazzani river, the diplomat said that so far UNIFIL doesn’t have any evidence that backs Lebanese allegations that a Jewish state patrol crossed the Wazzani.

The UNIFIL has managed to prevent an escalation of the conflict and enabled the Lebanese armed forces to extend their patrols beyond the Litani River in the country’s south, Le Roy said.

“There are so many achievements… I say that in fact for our peacekeepers because in the media there are always the failures, the weaknesses and we acknowledge the failures… But at the same time our peacekeepers are working in extremely difficult conditions in places where nobody wants to go and they are in some cases risking their lives,” he added.
