Gemayel Meets Brahimi, Says Lebanon Must Not 'Pay Price of Chaos Again'

Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel on Wednesday called for sparing Lebanon the repercussions of the Syrian conflict, urging Arab states and the international community to “utilize their capabilities in order to halt the bloodshed and chaos.”

“The solution in Syria requires a miracle due to the complications, which also pose a threat to the neighboring countries,” said Gemayel after meeting U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi at the United Nations' headquarters in Geneva.

He stressed that Lebanon must not “pay the price once again.”

Gemayel also lauded Brahimi's “efforts, patience and diplomacy that are aimed at serving a humanitarian cause and halting the bloodshed in Syria.”

For his part, Brahimi said “the situation is critical and does not bear any delay or procrastination,” hailing “the generosity of the Lebanese in hosting the Syrian refugees.”

“There is an urgent interest in putting an end to the situation in Syria and restoring stability … This solution would provide stability in the region, especially in Lebanon, at all the political, security and economic levels,” Brahimi added.

Brahimi replied, "I know exactly what you mean: we tried democracy in my country, too, and it was a disaster! Well, we didn't exactly try it, but we sure thought about it for a minute or two--if we hadn't cancelled that Islamist electoral victory, we'd really be in trouble today."
Stability to Brahimi means the powerful sitting on the weak so they can't even breathe. "Ah, it's nice and quiet here, isn't it?"
