German league leaders Bayern Munich are waiting on the fitness of striker Mario Gomez and defender Daniel van Buyten for Sunday's match at Schalke 04.

Gomez, who has scored seven goals in his last two Bundesliga games, came off with a groin strain at halftime of Bayern's 2-0 win at Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday in Group A.

Van Buyten came off after only 22 minutes in Spain after complaining of pain in his Achilles tendon.

Both are suffering from injuries picked up before the international matches at the start of September.

Gomez missed Germany's Euro 2012 qualifier victory over Austria and the friendly draw with Poland because a groin strain, while Belgium's van Buyten cried off for his country due to pain in his Achilles.

"We will have to see how they are, both had the same injuries from before the international break," said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.

Having spoken to Bayern doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt, neither player is expected to be out for more than a short period, but Gomez admitted he was disappointed to play just a half in Spain.

"It is bitter, because I was full of the juice, I hope it is nothing serious," he said.

Bayern are top of the German league with four wins from the five games so far, while Schalke are sixth with three wins and two defeats.
