Kataeb Calls for Jezzine By-Elections: A Party Panel is Studying New Electoral Law Proposals

The Kataeb Party hoped on Monday the parliamentary by-elections would be held in Jezzine, while revealing that efforts are underway to devise a new electoral law.

It said after its weekly politburo meeting that a panel of specialists from the party is studying new proposals on the electoral law.

It also urged the cabinet to “respect the law and national interest and find solutions to pending issues.”

In addition, it reiterated the initiative of party chief Amin Gemayel aimed at ending the presidential deadlock in Lebanon, calling for a meeting of Christian figures that will confront and end the vacuum at the Baabda Palace.

Gemayel demanded on Sunday that a dialogue session be held in order to reach consensus over holding a parliamentary session and electing a president.

“The Kataeb party welcomes any dialogue between the Lebanese factions, which is part of national efforts that will inevitably lead to the 'Lebononization' of affairs instead of awaiting foreign agreements that may or may not take place,” noted the politburo statement.

Lebanon has been without a president since May when the term of Michel Suleiman ended.

Disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the elections.

The Jezzine by-elections would be aimed at filling the vacuum caused by the death of Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Helou in June.
