U.N. Chief Extends STL Mandate for Three Years

W300

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has extended the mandate of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) for a period of three years from March 1, 2015, in accordance with Security Council resolution 1757, a statement on the U.N. chief's website said.

The mandate of the STL, which is based near The Hague in the Netherlands, is to hold trials for those accused of carrying out the bomb attack of February 14, 2005 in Beirut which killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 other people.

“The Secretary-General reaffirms the commitment of the United Nations to support the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure that impunity for such major crimes will not be tolerated,” the statement said.

“The United Nations looks forward to the continued support and cooperation of the Government of Lebanon,” it added.

Five Hizbullah members have been indicted over the killing. Party chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has dismissed the STL as a U.S.-Israeli scheme and vowed that the accused will never be found.

The trial in absentia began in January 2014 and is currently ongoing.

Southern why do you consider this tribunal to be fake? just because it the defendant are from hizbollah? It does not matter how many judges are swapped as the tribunal procedures do not depend on a judge but on an institution.

Most of all you should very well appreciate that the defendant have all their rights to defend themselves, to bring proofs and witnesses to defend themselves. Instead of just saying that it is a fake tribunal you should comment on the procedure whether guarantee the rights of the defendant or not. So far as it seems, we have not seen any the lawyers of the defendant protesting against those procedures.

why do you consider the stl a comedy or a theater? or do you prefer the way iranian execute their prisoner without any tribunal? It is estimated that 12000 iranian prisoners have been executed without any trial.

ft, what has israel got to do there? In any case I have never supported the legitimacy of the creation of the state of Israel. II rather have said that Israel is there and we have to live with it rather than fight against it.

The U.S/Israeli backed STL court, will continue to throw around random accusations, with no evidence. The funds of Lebanon gets used for these senseless tribunals, instead of the people.
