Miqati: No One Can Isolate Lebanon

W300

Premier Najib Miqati has rejected reports about the isolation of Lebanon following his meetings with U.S. officials in New York and alleged warnings that the international community would adopt certain measures against the country if it didn’t back U.N. Security Council sanctions on Syria.

In remarks to satellite TV network al-Arabiya on Thursday, Miqati said: “Lebanon is not in isolation and no one can isolate it.”

“It is always present on the international scene,” he said.

Miqati stressed that his meeting in New York with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was “very positive.”

The media delegation that was accompanying the premier returned to Beirut on Thursday while Miqati headed to a European capital for a short visit.

In an interview with pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Thursday, the prime minister denied that Clinton had warned him about certain measures on Lebanon if Lebanese authorities rejected Security Council action against Syria over its violent crackdown on protestors.

“First there was no warning and second we don’t need any warning because no one knows Lebanon’s interest better than us,” Miqati said.
