Cabinet to Appoint LU Head on Wednesday Amid Packed Agenda

The government is expected to discuss the appointment of the head of the Lebanese University on Wednesday along with 150 items on the agenda and 8 additional topics distributed to ministers on Monday.

The cabinet session at Baabda palace is expected to last for several hours or the discussion of several items could be postponed for another session over the packed agenda, An Nahar daily expected on Tuesday.

The initial agenda had 150 items but a supplement of nine additional topics, including the appointment of the LU president, was distributed to ministers Monday, the newspaper said.

The five candidates for the post that is reserved for Shiites are: Hassan Zeineddine, Zeinab Saad, Ali Ahmed Rammal, Ali Haidar Alaeddine and former Minister Adnan Sayyed Hussein.

Al-Liwaa newspaper expected the ministers loyal to Change and Reform bloc leader Michel Aoun to discuss the delay of appointments to positions reserved for Christians, including the head of the Higher Judicial Council.

The daily said that Judge Tannous Meshleb will most likely be chosen for the post if Premier Najib Miqati, President Michel Suleiman and the ministers loyal to National Struggle Front leader Walid Jumblat continued to reject Judge Arlette Tawil Jreissati, who is backed by Aoun.

Another female judge, Alice Shabtini, is also a candidate.
