Syria released on Saturday 553 people arrested during anti-regime protests to honor Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast that marks the climax of the annual hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, state news agency SANA said.

"On the occasion of (Eid) al-Adha, 553 people arrested during the events in Syria and whose hands are not stained by blood, have been freed," it said.

Rights groups say thousands of people have been arrested since the crackdown began, claiming many detainees are tortured or even killed in prison.

A weak gesture from a soviet-style secular tyrant. Imagine the stories the prisoners have of torture and abuse. How many more prisoners are in jail? How many have disappeared and will never return?

I remember clearly he murdered people every day during Ramadan.
