Saniora: Those Who Disavow STL would be Exposing Lebanon to Danger

Head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc, former premier Fouad Saniora, warned Monday that “those who disavow the Special Tribunal for Lebanon would be exposing Lebanon to danger.”

In an interview on MTV, Saniora said “financing is one of the aspects of dealing with the tribunal, but respecting the protocol signed between the Lebanese state and the STL is what’s important.”

Separately, the ex-PM said the popular rally that will be held Sunday by the Mustaqbal Movement in the northern city of Tripoli was not aimed at “toppling the government” of Premier Najib Miqati, who is a Tripoli native.

Miqati’s government has “turned its back on the voters, because he was elected in the 2009 parliamentary polls according to an electoral platform then he accepted to head a government that is against the will of his voters,” Saniora added.

“Animosity with world powers and the Arab states is not in Lebanon’s interest,” Saniora advised Miqati.

Turning to the issue of the suspended national dialogue, Saniora said: “We’re not rejecting dialogue, but we’re saying that we took part in dialogue for specific objectives.”

“For example, we engaged in dialogue and reached an agreement on the issue of Palestinian arms, the borders and the tribunal. Only one item is still pending: Hizbullah’s arms,” Saniora went on to say.
