Jumblat Holds onto Alliance with Miqati: I Believe in it

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat has stressed that he holds onto his alliance with Premier Najib Miqati in the cabinet, refuting reports about a change in his stances.

“I am part of the broad alliance with PM Najib Miqati,” Jumblat was quoted by al-Akhbar daily as saying on Friday.

“I am staying with Miqati,” he stressed. “And I believe in it.”

Asked about criticism that he was changing his political alliances, the PSP chief said: “I won’t take risks in my alliances.”

On the transfer of Lebanon’s share of funds to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Jumblat hailed the move as a positive step aimed at steering the country clear of the repercussions of the regional turmoil.

The Druze chief’s comments came as his PSP is making the final preparations for a mass ceremony to be held on Sunday on the occasion of the birthday of the party’s founder slain Druze leader Kamal Jumblat.

His son Walid is expected to announce a series of political stances, al-Liwaa daily reported.

Party representatives and MPs who were part of his Democratic Gathering will take part in the ceremony in an attempt to revive the parliamentary bloc, it said.

Jumblat dissolved the Democratic Gathering in January this year after four lawmakers - Marwan Hamadeh, Henry Helou, Antoine Saad and Fouad al-Saad - decided not to back his candidate for the post of prime minister.

He then established the National Struggle Front.
