After Aleppo Victory, Syria's Assad Seeks Proposed Talks

W300

Syrian President Bashar Assad said in remarks published on Monday that he was prepared "to negotiate everything" at talks set to begin in later this month in Kazakhstan, seeking to cast himself as a peacemaker after his forces' recapture of Aleppo last month.

However the upcoming talks, brokered by Ankara and Moscow, are still in doubt as Syrian opposition groups have yet to confirm their participation.

In comments to French press from his Damascus palace, Assad also defended his troops' deadly bombardment of eastern Aleppo, saying the alternative would have been to leave the city's civilians to the mercy of "terrorists" — a term the government uses for all opposed to Assad's rule.

Assad questioned the credibility of Syrian opposition groups backed by the West and Saudi Arabia, which make up the bulk of the armed and political opposition to his rule.

"There's no limit to negotiations," Assad said. The remarks were carried by the Syrian state media. "But who is going to be there from the other side, we don't know yet. ... The viability of the conference depends on that."

Past Syrian peace talks have run aground on the question of Assad's future and whether he is to continue as president, with the opposition insisting his departure is the precondition for any reforms.

Assad insisted the matter could only be resolved through a constitutional referendum.

"My position is related to the constitution," he said. "If they want to discuss this point, they need to discuss the constitution. You need a referendum for every (constitutional amendment). This is one of the points that could be discussed in the meeting" in Kazakhstan.

The talks are scheduled to begin in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Jan. 23. They follow a lengthy rapprochement between Russia, a key backer of Assad, and Turkey, a main sponsor of the opposition, that culminated in a cease-fire agreement that came into force on Dec. 30, but that has already started to erode.

The U.S. is excluded from the talks, and Russian officials have suggested U.S. officials could be invited at a later date.

As for Aleppo, Assad said the government forces were forced "to liberate" the city.

"And there is a price, sometimes, but at the end the people are liberated from the terrorists," he added.

Once Syria's largest city and industrial hub, Aleppo has been devastated by nearly six years of war. Rebels took control of its eastern districts in 2012, before surrendering it to government authority last month.

The U.N. said the government's relentless military campaign, which displaced tens of thousands of civilians, could have violated the laws of war.

Mystic is a follower of satan whether he realizes it or not. So its not strange that he reacts so strongly to hearing someone say that about one of satans most useful evil men - bashar el assad.

Hussayn (as) would never accept mystic as his ally since he supports someone who is the opposite of what Hussayn (as) preached and stood for.

Shameless hypocrite.

I support Assad and you support Al Qaeda and ISIS.
God will judge, you support the ones that murdered the Imams to begin with.
Yeah Barry there is a big meat grinder you will be able to fit in too, join your salafi friends.

Thumb Mrowwe over 7 years

I don't support isis, al qaida or anyone who kills civilians deliberatly. They are misguided terrorists who follow shaytaan like you do. Nor do i support those who killed the imams.

That's two false accusations you made against me which according to God is haram, that is if you really believe in the Quran? The same Quran that forbade the kind of things Bashar stands for.

Typical of you wilyet el faqih shias to accuse Muslims of supporting isis and supporting the killers of the imams. Thats because you are liars who don't know the difference between right and wrong.

You're an extremist who not only supports terrorism but wants to put people in a meat grinder. Thats a sure sign of a human devil. Normal humans find it disgusting to entertain such a thought.
Do you really think the imams did such things you hypocrite?

You're true imams are bashar and putin, not Ali (as) and Husayn (as).

Of course, and Zahleh bombardment was justified. Ashrafieh multiple bombardments were all justified. Baadba, Yaezeh, Fiyadiyeh bombardments were also justified.
But Nahr el Bared bombardment was not justified that's why Hassan Nasrallan put red lines. The Lebanese government and Lebanese army disagreed with Hassan Nasrallah. François Hajj led the charge and crossed Hassan Nasrallah's red lines. Hassan Nasrallah was not Amused. The rest is history.

@FT, the defenders and civilians of Zahleh were described in similar terms and worse by the regime you still support. Ashrafieh's protectors and civilians where described in similar terms and worse by your kind and the regime you always supported. Aoun and his army were the head terrorists, traitors, Zionists and worse accordingly to your side's sermons and the regime you still support. The more things change the more they stay the same.

I remember when your Hassan Nasrallah was against the Lebanese army weeding out the terrorists that your Assad freed from jail and sent to Lebanon, something about red lines. Moreover instead of giving some of their arms to the Lebanese army his MPs complained that the American where supplying the LAF with some sorely needed arms. Are your Assad supplied terrorists more valuable than other types of terrorists with the same ideology? Hassan Nasrallah said yes they are quite different and need to be protected by red lines. It's also the reason Hassan Nasrallah's MPs sprung to the defense of your terrorist Michel Samaha, he is your Assad's terrorists.

Lastly @FT, According to the Syrian regime, the SSNP and the Ba'ath that you support Lebanon is a Syrian province, part of Syria and a Qotb in universal Baathist nation; ie the Syrians were just weeding out renegades who were occupying Zahle a city in Syria.

Bashars recipe for saving civilians: Kill them, bury their children under rubble, destroy their homes, turn them into refugees, arm militias to fight them and call the dead, injured and oppressed terrorists.

They are using the methods of their master and ally, israel.
