Speaker Nabih Berri voiced calls on Wednesday for a speedy agreement on a new election law, as he assured that the parliament will hold “intensive legislative meetings.”

“Time is running out. We are required to complete a new election law as soon as possible,” Berri said during his weekly meeting with MPs.

The Speaker voiced fears that parties calling for the replacement of the current 1960 law, would be secretly supporting it.

Political parties are bickering over amending the current 1960 election law which divides seats among the different religious sects.

The current parliament has failed to amend the law, and has extended its mandate twice amid criticism. New elections are scheduled for May 2017.

“The parliament will witness an active workshop, intense legislation and supervision. We will hold accountability sessions for ministries,” added Berri.

The Speaker is expected to call for a legislative mission in less than ten days, said LBCI.
