Four people were killed in Kinshasa Friday and Saturday in unrest that followed the announcement of DR Congo President Joseph Kabila's re-election, the national police chief said.

The victims were three looters who were shot by security forces and a woman hit by a stray bullet, General Charles Bisengimana told reporters.

After the election commission announced Friday that Kabila had won the November 28 polls violent protests and looting broke out in several neighborhoods of the capital.

Protesters set cars and piles of tyres on fire and threw stones at police, who used tear gas and fired shots in the air to disperse them.

The election commission said Kabila had won 49 percent of the vote to the 32 percent registered by the runner-up, veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi.

Tshisekedi quickly rejected the election result on Friday and declared himself president.

The situation in the capital remained tense Saturday, with violent protests breaking out in some areas and police firing shots in the air to disperse people if they appeared to be forming into a group.
