Hariri Meets Saudi King in Riyadh for First Visit Since Strained Ties

Prime Minister Saad Hariri arrived in Riyadh at dawn on Wednesday three months after his abrupt now-reversed resignation from the capital.

Hariri first met with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz where talks highlighted the bilateral relations between Lebanon and SA and the latest developments in Lebanon, according to Hariri's media office.

The Premier is expected to hold talks later with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Hariri's visit is likely to boost relations with his Saudi backers.

Counselor at the Royal Court, Nizar al-Alula, Saudi Embassy Charge d’Affaires Walid al-Bukhari and Lebanon's ambassador to Saudi Arabia greeted Hariri at the airport.

A statement issued by Hariri's office on Tuesday said the PM left for Riyadh at an invitation from Saudi King Salman that was delivered to him Monday by Saudi royal envoy Nizar al-Aloula.

The November 4 resignation and Hariri's prolonged stay in Saudi Arabia stirred tensions between Riyadh and Beirut, amid suspicions he had been placed under house arrest. France eventually intervened and the premier returned to Lebanon where the resignation announcement was reversed.

Anybody who thinks the king of Saudi Arabia can have a good moral effect on any elected official in Lebanon has absolutely no faith in democracy nor the rule of law. Hariri's "Saudi Arabian backers", those would be the people financing rebels in Syria and Iraq?
