Jumblat Laments Bloodshed in Syria, Says 'Nations Fighting at Syria's Expense'

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Friday expressed sorrow over the suffering of Syrians in their war-torn country, saying that international powers are “struggling and negotiating at the expense of the Syrian people.”

“The Syrian people tragedy may be one of the greatest tragedies of so-called humanity in modern history,” said Jumblat in a tweet.

“Eight years of killing with all kinds of weapons, displacement, destruction, kidnapping and arrest, and no one is taking action. The Syrian people have been left unarmed while nations are negotiating at their expense,” he stated.

Referring to the month long bombardment on Eastern Ghouta, the MP said: “Today Ghouta vs Afrin. What would it be tomorrow?” he asked.

Thousands of civilians poured out of Eastern Ghouta on Thursday after a month-long bombardment by the Syrian regime that left nearly 1,250 civilians dead, around a fifth of them children.

Defying expectations and calls to step down, Syria's President Bashar al-Assad was strengthening his grip on power as the conflict entered its eighth year.

For the past seven years, international efforts to bring an end to the violence raging across Syria have consistently failed.
