Geagea Says Baalbek-Hermel to See 'Historic Coup' in Elections

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea announced Thursday that the Baalbek-Hermel electoral district will witness a “historic coup” in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“What's happening today in Baalbek-Hermel is not a mere electoral process but rather a historic coup,” Geagea said in Maarab meeting with a delegation from the town of Ainata. The delegation was accompanied by Antoine Habshi, the LF's candidate for Baalbek-Hermel's Maronite seat.

“The issue is not merely about electing a certain MP or not. It is much bigger – it's about our existence. We either exist or not,” the LF leader added.

“What's happening in this electoral battle has much greater importance than the developmental and constructional issues. It is a historic coup, seeing as throughout 50 years, circumstances had prevented us from choosing real representatives for the region,” Geagea went on to say.

“This candidate will enter parliament, and this in itself is a historic coup,” the LF leader emphasized.

He noted that the moment the nomination was announced, “the situations in the region were rectified.”

“All other candidates in the Baalbek-Hermel region started approaching things on the basis that both Baalbek-Hermel and Deir al-Ahmar exist and this alone is very important,” Geagea added.

“We do not want development or construction, we only want to live in this region the same way our grandfathers used to live,” the LF leader went on to say.

Baalbek-Hermel is a major political and electoral stronghold of Hizbullah.

The LF and its allies believe that the new electoral law, which is based on proportional representation, will allow them to take some seats from Hizbullah.
