Abou Faour Criticizes Decree Granting Lebanese Nationality to Foreigners
Democratic Gathering bloc MP Wael Abou Faour criticized on Saturday a decree reportedly signed by President Michel Aoun granting Lebanese citizenship to foreigners and Syrian businessmen.
“Anyone who sells citizenship can not be entrusted to run a nation,” Abou Faour said in a statement.
The controversial decree reportedly gives citizenship to some 300 people mostly including names of Syrian, Palestinian, Western and Gulf businessmen, as well as a number of stateless applicants.
“What will be left of national claims when the Lebanese nationality has been put out for sale by non-eligible financiers,” he said.
He criticised the contradiction between the decree and a Lebanese law that bans Lebanese women married to foreigners from passing their nationality to their children.
“Who will protect the rights of deserving sons of fathers and Lebanese mothers who suffer before Lebanon’s courts and departments to prove their right to nationality?” said the MP in his statement.
The controversial decree is expected to provoke criticism, especially since it will be issued by a caretaker government.
Reports raised the possibility that the decree could be challenged in front of the Constitutional Council.

name a few 'contributions' these people have made to Lebanon.?
The only contribution that is clear is the contribution they made to the Aoun family bank accounts.

Among those naturalized is a Syrian 'businessman' who committed a crime in Turkey and was jailed for it.

So we all like to benefit of citizenships of other countries, but we dont want others to have that benefit even if it involves investments that will benefit our country and its workforce. Countries like Cyprus and Malta are two examples that have "Citizenship by investment"-programmes. I would say their economies are a bit healthier than our. All thistalk of this being a "prelude to naturalization og (syrian and palestinian) refugees is just bulls..., and you know it. I am not the biggest fan (to put it mildly) of the MOU between FPM and Hezbollah, but on the stance on the issue of refugee there is no one I trust more than Michel Aoun.

I agree with you on the double standards of the Lebanese regarding benefiting from citizenship of other countries and not wanting to give theirs to foreign nationals. Having said that, I think you are missing the point.
Aoun and his party ( Bassil and Co. ) have been the greatest critics of naturalization specifically when it comes to Syrians. They used it and abused it during the elections. Now, to naturalize over 350 people mainly of Syrian origin is a bit hypocritical.

I am sure that even Abou Faour has relatives or close associates that has dual citizenships. Lebanese gladly accepts citizenships from the western world. Some countries just hand them out to just about everyone after a certain number of years of residency, while others hand-pick who they want according to education, work and achievements. I dont know these particular cases, but I am confident that these given lebanese citizenships are contributing to the lebanese economy to a much bigger degree that anyone of us on this thread are doing.
