GLC Welcomes Wage Hike but Demands Retroactive Pay

The head of the General Labor Confederation, Ghassan Ghosn, welcomed on Thursday the cabinet’s approval of a wage hike but stressed that the payment of salaries should be retroactive to October.

Ghosn told Voice of Lebanon radio station (100.5) that the wage boost made by the government on Wednesday will be effective as soon as the decree is signed.

“We will demand a retroactive action,” he said, however.

The head of the GLC also told several newspapers published Thursday that the government should make yearly salary increases to prevent inflation and a rise in cost of living.

The price index committee should also hold routine meetings to prevent any future delay in the adoption of a boost, he said.

While lamenting that the cabinet’s decision did not guarantee a full solution to the issue of wages, Ghosn said it paved way for a rightful demand of a hike which was earlier seen as a taboo.

“The salary increase file is now closed after the workers paid the price of the wasted time,” he said.

The different parties in the government, the GLC and the Economic Committees had been bickering on a hike for months. Several proposals have been rejected by the Shura Council.

But the cabinet finally adopted a package that stipulates the minimum wage to rise to LL675,000.
