Netanyahu Vows 'Forceful' Response if More Attacks from Lebanon

W300

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel views with "great gravity" the latest flare-up on the Lebanese border and pledged a tough response in the event of further incidents.

"We shall react forcefully to any attack against us," Netanyahu said in a statement. "I advise Hizbullah not to test Israel's strength. Hizbullah is once again endangering Lebanon due to its aggression."

Israel and Hizbullah fought a devastating month-long war in 2006.

Israel said earlier it had launched air strikes against Hizbullah observation posts in Lebanon after shots were fired from across the border towards its troops the previous evening.

A Hizbullah spokesman declined to comment.

Another member of the group, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said no Hizbullah positions were hit. He said shrapnel hit a structure belonging to Green Without Borders, an environmental NGO that Israel says is an arm of Hizbullah, allegations denied by the group.

The Hizbullah member would neither confirm nor deny that an attack had been launched from Lebanon.

Lebanon's Higher Defense Council, the country's top defense body, said it would file a complaint to the U.N. Security Council "over Israel's aggressions on Lebanon last night."

The border flare-up came hours after Lebanon rejected an Israeli call to reform the UN peacekeeping force which patrols the border ahead of a UN Security Council vote to renew its mandate.

The Israeli army had said earlier that a "security incident" was unfolding near Manara, a kibbutz near the UN-demarcated border between the two countries, and urged residents to take shelter.

It reported no Israeli casualties.

Manara was quiet on Wednesday morning, an AFP journalist reported. The army told residents they could come into the open and resume work in the fields.

Hizbollah and Natanyahu are two sides of the same coin depending on each other for survival. Without Hizb arms, Natanyahu would have lost election long time ago and Palestinians would have been represented in Israeli government. Keep in mind most pro-Palestinian US candidate was Berny Sander. Sanders called Natanyahu a biggot as do many Israelis. Thanks for Hizbollah for protecting Netanyahu job and preventing peace and prosperity... that would erode Hizb fake support. The shia support Hizb as much as the 99% support of Saddam by Iraqis and 99% support of Kadafi by Lybians. Hizb will soon have the same fate once people wake up and the puppet president who sold Lebanon for 30 pieces of silver is rotting in jail.

All agree that Lebanon is located in a difficult and complex region and many wars and disasters happened, all agree that we have a lot of refugees in the country, all agree that the government is corrupt ,all agree that the country is governed by warlords .Nevertheless the biggest challenge for Lebanon is that the population will realise and accept that all Lebanese citizens should have equal rights and equal opportunities, disregards their different religious background. Unfortunately, some still believe that certain group should have more privileges than others . As long as this is the case unscrupulous warlords will keep control , their names and titles might change, but the misery of the people will not ,and of course foreign countries will keep intervening and patronizing , like we witnessed in the past 75 years

Could you be more specific on Hezbollah? How do we solve their armed presence? At least the other warlords do not have armed forces, except for a bodyguard or two.

The militia in question will disappear one day, no doubt about it, but many others will replace it like we saw in the past 75 years. My objective is to draw attention to the root cause of all the crises that have taken place since 1943, and i will always repeat that if the constitution of a nation offers more privileges to one group of the population based on religion or ethnicity this is doomed to fail, and the result is: CONTINUOUS INTERFERENCE OF FOREIGNERS, the corruption, lack of integrity, the feudal system, lack of national pride . It is naive to ignore it.

Unfortunately Lebanon is a divided country and into cantons : Muslim Shias,Muslim Sunnis,Druze, Christians, Armenians, which causes its weakness, thus allowing Israel to intimidate Lebanon by sending all sorts of warnings.

People keep talking about Hizbos arms as if the decision is with Hassan Nasrallah. Been telling you lot the only way to kill a snake is cut of it's head. These arms decision are in Tehran. Only when that regime is brought down, however it is, will Lebanon be saved of this foreign entity and it's arms.

Indeed. My gut feeling is the decision was already made in Oman

Nice to see the Hasbarites and Mustaqbalites singing to the same tune. While at the same time the latter claim a "secret alliance" between Israel and Hezbollah, lol.
