Parts of Hawd al-Wilaya Bridge Collapse in Beirut’s Basta Area

Parts of the Hawd al-Wilaya Bridge in al-Basta al-Tahta area in Beirut collapsed on Thursday, prompting the Internal Security Forces to close it to traffic.

The ISF said in a statement that the collapse took place at around 3:30 p.m. and it has since closed off the bridge and diverted traffic around it.

In February, the Council of Development and Reconstruction dismantled the Jal el-Dib bridge that links Beirut with the North after warnings the structure could collapse.

The decision to remove the bridge was taken after a building collapsed in Ashrafiyeh’s Fassouh neighborhood in January, leaving 27 people dead and 12 others injured.

The collapse put the spotlight on the dismal state of old properties across the country and sparked widespread anger and accusations that authorities had failed to address the problem.

I hate those two bridges. They seem like leftovers from World War I.

Those bridges were abused by ignoring the max limit weigh
