Workers at the State Employees' Cooperative escalated their nationwide strike on Monday as they kicked off a sit-in near the institution’s headquarter in Karantina area.

The employees flocked from across Lebanon to Karantina announcing that they stopped receiving medical treatment applications.

They have been holding successive protests against the cabinet’s failure to approve a batch of demands including the improvement of their retirement system and benefits.

The employees previously warned that they will hold an open-ended strike until all their demands are met.

A statement issued later by the protesters stressed that they will not block roads or burn tires to force the cabinet to implement their demands “but we will use our right to peacefully protest” for as long as it takes “until all our demands are carried out.”

It pointed out that they will not suspend their strike based on vague promises.

They vowed to go on with their “civil, peaceful strike.”
