Defense Minister on Army Day: Military Institution Must Be Left out of Political Disputes

W300

Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn congratulated on Tuesday the army on the occasion of Army Day, hoping that this occasion would serve as an opportunity to place national interests above all else.

He therefore urged in a statement “politicians to realize the importance of the critical phase in Lebanon and the region and allow it to perform its duties and keep it away from petty disputes.”

“The army should not be dragged into these disputes because harming it will harm the entire country,” he stressed.

Despite its modest means, the army was able to withstand the repercussions of the local and regional tensions and successfully avert strife in Lebanon, he continued.

Moreover, the minister said: “The various campaigns against the military institution will never be able to destroy the army, which has been fortified by the will of the people.”

Addressing the soldiers, Ghosn declared: “You are the country’s backbone and your institution will always protect all of the Lebanese.”

“All the attempts to target you will fail … and your determination will thwart all conspiracies,” he stressed.

“Given the current major challenges, we as politicians, have the responsibility to assist the army in performing its duties through supporting it and presenting it with all moral and financial means,” added the defense minister.

On Monday, Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji stressed that the military won’t allow the nation to be turned into a battleground for Syrian differences.

“No matter where the situation in Syria leads to, the army will be in utmost readiness to play its role and assume its national responsibilities in accordance with the decisions of the political authority in limiting the repercussions of these events on Lebanon, protecting the residents of border regions and preventing strife,” Qahwaji said.

On Sunday, the Army Command issued a stern statement against opposition al-Mustaqbal bloc MP Moeen al-Merehbi who accused the army chief of being a failure and responsible for civil strife in the country.

Merehbi also accused the army of becoming a bystander in the repeated violations of Syrian forces of Lebanon’s border.

The military has done nothing to stop the displacement of Akkar residents who are fleeing their homes over the border clashes and shelling, he said.

But the army snapped back, saying it is a lawmaker’s duty to preserve the army and not abuse his parliamentary immunity by attacking the military and creating a dispute between Akkar and the armed forces.

with hizbushaitan training and arming fpm and others (for what purpose other than civil war?), and an army chief following auon and appointed by the syrian regime, the army's cohesion is far from being strong, rather it is on the brink of breaking up soon.
hizbushaitan and fpm are driving the country to civil war, failing to read the lesons of the past, as well as what is happening in syria.
they will fail as they failed so far in achieving anything else....

The same person who advocates the shooting of M14 supporters in the head and dissolving them in acid wants us to provide proofs about his party’s total disregard for law, order and moral decency. Shimtenin fina mni7 w'mkatrin. One day you'll have to wipe that chips eating grin off your faces and deal with us on equal footing and then we will see where we are going to store your party's weapon of terror and intimidation.

@ FT, you said and I quote: "M14 elites and leaders deserve to be blown off 'hariri style' yes of course". let me respond to this you sicko, time and history is on our side , Syria is being freed of oppression as we speak and God willing Lebanon is next, so if I was you I'll start packing my stuff and make arrangements with Iran to host you because that is the only place available for your likes because the sewer where your fearless leader is hiding will no longer be an option as for the rest of March 8 the way of Hariri's death will look amature compared to what is gonna happen to your Syrian/Iranian stooges, I got my beer and popcorn ready, it's gonna be a one hell of a show.

@ FL, is punk the best you can come up with? I'm not sure why you feel the need to get low and dirty but I guess that is your class scum just pure scum and I'll refrain from responding to your insult but I'll just say you're the typical keyboard hero. What attention do I divert? Are the people you support not Syrian/iranian puppets? What happens in Syria has a lot to do with Lebanon, once the criminal Syrian regime falls and it will then your masters in March 8 are doomed and so are you.

confirmations are being voiced daily. so please revert to Nadim Gemayel's declaration of today and you will be fixed on this.
