Army to Sue Merehbi for 'Attacking Military Institution, Insulting Its Leadership'

W300

The Army Command on Tuesday announced that it has “launched measures aimed at prosecuting MP Moein al-Merehbi” after he “insisted on attacking the military institution and insulting its leadership,” noting that from now on it “will not comment on the remarks of the aforementioned MP.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Merehbi slammed Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji as an “unsuccessful person,” accusing him of being “responsible for all the mistakes and seditions.”

The lawmaker also said the army commander is “an employee who should do his job,” accusing him of “exploiting the (military) institution in order to become the next president of the republic.”

In a statement issued by the Army Command on Monday in response to Merehbi’s remarks, the military institution said: “Let the lawmaker know that all the officers and soldiers of the army are not his employees, but rather the servants of all the Lebanese people, and they only abide by the decisions of the legitimate authorities and the collective national will.”

Merehbi hit back on Tuesday, telling the Kuwaiti daily al-Jarida that “the army’s statement is very silly and full of lies as usual.”

“I am willing to resign, together with Army Commander Jean Qahwaji, and let us resort to some trustworthy judges in order to tell who is negligent and who is exploiting his position for personal gains,” Merehbi added.

Merehbi has been locked in a war of words with the military institution ever since the shooting death in May of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed at an army checkpoint in Akkar.

he is an employee, he is unsuccessfull,so what is new? this is the sentiment of most of the Lebanese people: is he going to sue us all?
clearly he has the mentality of his boss aoun, and cannot accept anybody to criticize him.

agree @Harrier.... by the same token, Ashraf Rifi should sue Aoun and all his brilliant MPs, Berri and his MPs, and hizb of thugs MPs as they have on numerous occasions attacked his person and his performance unjustifiably!

How many times do I need to repeat that the Army (leaders) shouldn't get involved in politics. This isn't its mission. If General Qahwaji has a personal agenda and dreams of becoming our next President, then he should step down and dedicate himself full time in this.

For the time being, we need an army leader that focuses all his attention and energy on the sovereignty and security of the Republic.

This army is a disgrace, they serve the interest of the Syrian/Iranian regimes led by their cronies HA and the FPM, the army's job is to protect the sovereignty of it's nation and defend it's citizens no matter who the violators are but our beloved army are just mere observes when it comes to Syrian violations and that is a fact, as for the killings of the 2 sheikhs in Akkar, well anyone who believes it was not deliberate needs to be examined, here is a convoy of vehicles passing thru the checkpoint whether they stopped or not is irrelevant, the army without any warning shots opens fire on this convoy hitting ONLY the vehicle the 2 sheikhs were in killing them both which both happen to be anti March 8 , out of the 4 or 5 vehicles the only vehicle targeted happen to be the one with the 2 sheikhs in it? give me a break, a corrupt government with a corrupt army command, plain and simple.

@fadi_albeiruti, my friend, not everything is always as it seems. Yes there are thugs and corruption in every organization but please let us not condemn an entire institution full of noble young people serving their country and giving their lives by being caught in the middle of political mayhem. The army is used day in and day out as a post office delivering messages very between awful and dishonorable politicians full of themselves and only serving themselves instead of the people. The Army is my pride always and forever and yes I believe those who abuse their authority while wearing the uniform and commit murders will be brought to justice.

@Bandoul, I believe I stated " our beloved army " and also made sure I mentioned that the army's command was corrupt and not the entire army, I love and support the LAF as much as anybody, but as a free thinking man I have no problems criticizing where criticism is due, this honorable army is led by corrupt Syrians/Iranians boot lickers period, there is no other way of putting it.
