Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah addressing the annual iftar banquet organized by the women’s activities department of the Islamic Resistance Support Organization: I extend my condolences to the Egyptian army and officers and this incident would benefit Israel the most. According to preliminary assessment, one can say that it is a suspicious incident. over 11 years

Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday hoped the rival March 14 camp will be “allowed” to return to the national dialogue table, warning that the alternative to dialogue would be “chaos.”

“Only dialogue is possible and no one wants to eliminate the other. We hope they will be allowed to return to dialogue and we hope dialogue will resume. Dialogue is prohibited in Syria because the Americans, the West and Israel are not allowing the Syrian opposition to engage in dialogue,” Nasrallah said in a televised address during an iftar banquet held by the women’s activities department of the Islamic Resistance Support Organization.

“We hope they (March 14 forces) will not put preconditions for resuming dialogue because the alternative to dialogue is the chaos they (the West and its allies) are seeking to spread in the region,” Nasrallah added.

President Michel Suleiman is continuing his consultations to resume the national dialogue on August 16 as he is seeking to ensure that all participants are present at the all-party talks, reported the daily al-Mustaqbal on Sunday.

Sources close to the president highlighted the need to resume the talks amid the critical local and regional situation. They stressed that he will not back down from his demand to continue the talks.

Meanwhile, prominent March 14 political sources ruled out the possibility that the dialogue will be held on time “because the consultations would not have been ripe prior to the date.” It is likely therefore that the national dialogue would be postponed again.

The all-party talks were initially postponed over the March 14 camp’s decision to boycott the meeting over the failure to hand over telecom data to the security forces and the failure to tackle Hizbullah’s possession of arms. The telecom data has since been handed to security forces.

“The other camp does not want a defense strategy. It rather wants two things: the Resistance's weapons and the resignation of the government,” Nasrallah charged.

“The March 14 government is a government of taxes and a government of the financial elite. Should the March 14 forces rise to power, they will create fronts against Syria in the North and the Bekaa, while this government has managed to disassociate itself,” Hizbullah’s leader noted.

Addressing the controversy over his group’s arsenal of weapons, Nasrallah said: “There are fears that the weapons are in the possession of the Shiites, but let us talk rationally: all the Lebanese are threatened and this resistance represents a force of deterrence amid the fears, so what can we do? Rationally speaking, we must dispel the fears and preserve the resistance in order to ward off the Israeli threats.”

“The March 14 camp is saying that the presence of arms will prevent holding elections in Lebanon, but the 2005 elections were held in the presence of arms and you won the majority and the 2009 elections and the recent Koura by-election were also held amid the presence of arms,” Nasrallah added, addressing the March 14 forces.

He stressed that “the Resistance's arms were not used to impose electoral lists, while some political forces in other areas terrorized people with their weapons.”

“Accusations that we are behind the chaos of weapons are unacceptable, as all the Lebanese have weapons, except for the weapons of deterrence such as Zilzal missiles,” added Nasrallah.

“The March 14 camp is saying that the presence of arms prevents the rise of the state, but the state did not exist even before the creation of Hizbullah. Who prevented the rise of the state?” he said.

Nasrallah noted that sectarianism is the first real reason preventing the rise of the state, adding that Hizbullah “would benefit the most from the rise of a real state in Lebanon.”

He reassured that Lebanon cannot be ruled by one sect, warning that “whoever thinks that a certain sect must rule the country would be dragging the country into destruction.” “I hereby declare that the Shiite sect in Lebanon does not want to be a ruling sect or a leading sect,” added Nasrallah.

Turning to the Syrian crisis, Hizbullah’s chief said “the solution in Syria is to end the fighting and resort to dialogue without preconditions.”

Commenting on Sunday’s deadly attack on an Egyptian army outpost in Sinai near the border with Israel, Nasrallah extended condolences to the Egyptian army and officers.

“This incident would benefit Israel the most. According to preliminary assessment, one can say that it is a suspicious incident,” he said.

“All Muslim sects do not accept the approach of slaughtering and killing over differences with the other. This is among the biggest threats our societies are facing and I say there are two threats: Israel and the Takfiri, murderer mind,” he added.

In Sunday's attack, 35 gunmen in Bedouin clothing opened fire on the troops before crossing into Israel in an armored vehicle, Egyptian officials said. Israel said five gunmen were killed on its side.

Shiism is headed for a Strategic defeat in the region. Therefore, for Lebanon to survive and excel economically with fusion of Western capital, Lebanon must be ruled by its Maronites. The East offers zilch zero nada!!

Dob sle7ak (remove your guns from our heads) and we will prove to you once and for all who is the majority in this country and in which direction we want to go.

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

Let's be realistic, the army, with its current equipment, is unable to deter any aggression. The removal of Hezb's weapons does not guarantee that Israel will mind its own business and not bother Lebanon, as some may suggest, especially with oil and gas reserves in the mix.

This being said, the undemocratic nature of Hezb's decision making is problematic- that is to say that Hezb's decisions are not consented by the Lebanese people even if it affects the whole of Lebanon. It is thus seen as a Shiite group rather than a Lebanese group and this must change. There must be a greater Lebanese voice in the party.

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

It is precisely because of Lebanon's sectarian nature that Hezb's organizational structure must change to allow for a greater voice among other segments of the Lebanese population. In other words, we must maintain some of the strong elements of Hezb's presence temporarily (guerilla warfare tactics are a stronger deterrent to foreign aggression than conventional army tactics), while address some of its weaknesses (its perception as a Shiite group).

This must simultaneously be accompanied by a plan to prop up the Lebanese army and thus eventually remove the need for Hezb's presence in Lebanon later on.

Thumb Bandoul over 11 years

@gcb1 if you take away the Party of God's intimidation/subversion at gunpoint of otherwise non-followers, out of the equation, you'll find that the majority of the Lebanese want to sign a conditional non-combative agreement with Israel where the right of return for all Palestinian refugees on Lebanese soil is guaranteed. Please note that all Arab countries that have gone down this path have enjoyed relative peace on their borders with Israel. Once an agreement is signed there would be no reason for the military wing of the Party of God to exist and no reason for ISAREL to violate this agreement. Period, the end. Of course The Party of God will never ever let that happen because they are by definition an extension of the struggle between IRAN and ISRAEL/USA and not a Lebanese Resistance. They exist for the sole purpose of posing a threat to ISRAEL while IRAN pursues its agenda of aggression and domination of the middle east as a Nuclear Power.

Thumb Bandoul over 11 years

@gcb1, I forgot to mention that I am offended by your analysis and your tone, which suggest a superiority and the constant hint that your feel you wisdom eclipses those of us "not as smart as you". Your often condescending and narrow and that is what gets most people irritated. We (as in M14) reject shar7an wa'faslan weapons outside the authority of the state. We know, and it is a proven fact, that if you leave Israel alone, it will leave us alone, period. Where on earth do you come up with "guerilla warfare tactics are a stronger deterrent to foreign aggression"??? Muddying the waters with narrow analysis such as above serves absolutely no purpose other than to sidetrack the people from the real issues. I respectfully acknowledge your right to speak your mind and give your opinion but kindly do not preach to us, we are not children and some of us are old enough to have suffered the Lebanese civil war first hand and have earned the right to bring our two cents to the table.

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

You speak as if Israel has signed multiple peace treaties with Arab countries. To date, it has signed only with two: Jordan and Egypt (against the will of the aspirations of the Jordanian and Egyptian people).

You also speak as if if one reaches out to Israel, it will be glad to make peace. I disagree. How many times have Fatah reached out and made fair compromises to Israel, only to watch Israel continue building illegal settlements on Palestinian territory against international law? How many times did Hamas implictly recognize Israel's right to exist, while Israel has made no effort to offer any such compromises? Must we seriously go on about Israel's long time reluctance to offer a serious peace deal to Palestinians?

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

Indeed, Israel is acting in its own interests, much like any other states are. If Israel signed peace treaties with Jordan and Egypt, it is because the conditions of the treaties favored Israel's geopolitical strategy. But signing a peace treaty with Lebanon, especially with the discovery of oil and gas reserves, may not be in Israel's geopolitical interests- and this has been reflected through leaked documents and comments made by senior officials, not to mention Israel's past and current behavior.

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

As for your comment that I speak as if my wisdom is above you all, I did not know that calling for a civilized debate is equivalent to arrogance. I did not expect one to be offended if I called that a response be met with constructive and academic criticism without irrelevant insults.

Missing gcb1 over 11 years

@bandoul,

Overall, your assumption that a simple peace treaty with Israel is not only desirable but possible is maybe flawed. I wish that Israel and Lebanon reach a fair deal, because economic cooperation with Israel would help Lebanese economic growth. But whether this is feasibly and/or possible is another matter.

M14 politicians, such as Saad Hariri, have also constantly acknowledged Israel as a threat, and hostility toward Israel is not limited to residents of South Lebanon.

Your allegations of Hezb's connections with Iran I already addressed: I suggested that more Lebanese have a greater voice in the party so as to avoid any allegiance towards a foreign power and approach a defense strategy with a whole-of-Lebanon approach.

Thumb Bandoul over 11 years

@gcb1, You and I live on different planets. Let's just agree to disagree. Your interpretation of the facts is less than forthcoming and I attribute that to the fact that you exercise a Aounist mentality (I am not insulting you here, you should be flattered if you are one of his admirers). I am willing to wager that when GMA was against the Party of God, and indeed he was vehemently opposed to them, so were you. This is unfortunate because it leaves you challenged to consider alternate conclusions and outcome. BTW, not a single Palestinian organization has agreed to a two state solution, ever, so please, in the interest of the truth and for the sake of clarity and honesty, don’t muddy the water with innuendo and 2il w’2al.

Missing phillipo over 11 years

For many years before Fatah and then Hizballah took over large areas of Lebanon, the border between the Lebanon and Israel was very quiet. In many parts of the border there was not even a fence.
Israel has never wanted to occupy a single square centimeter of a free and democratic Lebanon. Now with all the findings of gas in the Med opposite the coast of the two countries it is time that these two countries get together and decide that peace between them can only bring about prosperity for their respective populations.
