A Turkish soldier was killed and seven others were wounded Thursday after an attack on their military vehicle in the western Turkish province of Izmir, NTV news channel reported.

The military vehicle was hit by an explosion at 8:00 AM before the assailants opened fire on the troops, who were on their way to Amfibi Marine Infantry post located in the tourist town of Foca.

The troops fired back but the attackers escaped, NTV added.

The identity of the assailants was not immediately clear.

Local Mehmet Isler spoke to NTV stating that the road was blocked earlier, but was opened for civil traffic only recently.

‘’We condemn this attack and we ask for peace and composure throughout the country’’ he added.

Thursday's attack comes after 22 people were killed Sunday in a deadly clash in the country's southeast, a frequent scene of clashes between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces.
