U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called on all warring parties in Syria to stop fighting immediately, saying there is no military solution to the conflict.

"The military option cannot be a solution. The violence must stop immediately," Ban told reporters in Kuwait City after talks with Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Sabah.

"This is totally an unacceptable situation. We cannot let the situation continue this way," Ban said.

Ban also said that all problems should be resolved "through a political process."

Earlier U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said that Ban has formally warmed Syrian President Bashar Assad against using chemical weapons in the country's civil war.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said the letter was handed to Syrian authorities on Tuesday.
