The Sanaa headquarters of dissident General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar was hit by two shells late on Tuesday during clashes between government forces and fighters loyal to Yemen's most powerful tribal leader, a source close to the general said.

"Two shells hit the headquarters of the First Armored Division," commanded by General Mohsen, the source said.

The headquarters is just north of University Square -- dubbed "Change Square" -- the epicenter of anti-regime protests that have roiled Yemen since January.

The projectiles were fired from the west of the capital, he added, without identifying the source of the shelling.

A medical official said four of Mohsen's men were wounded in the attack and hospitalized.

Fighting in Sanaa erupted before dawn on Tuesday between troops loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar's fighters, an Agence France Presse correspondent said.

There were also heavy exchanges between his tribesmen and loyalist troops around the military police headquarters and the official Saba news agency, as well as in a major thoroughfare, the correspondent said.
