Qaouq Says Hizbullah to Play 'Positive' Role in Cabinet Formation Process

W300

Hizbullah announced Sunday that it will play a “positive” role in the process of forming a new cabinet after MP Tammam Salam was appointed as prime minister-designate on Saturday.

Hizbullah “wants to be together with March 14 in the same national position in order to confront the Israeli threats,” said Sheikh Nabil Qaouq, the deputy head of the party's Executive Council, during a memorial service in the southern town of Kawthariyet al-Siyyad.

"A stance is needed ... and it is unacceptable and unpatriotic from any party in Lebanon to offer Israel a stance that relieves it and makes it happy,” Qaouq added.

He stressed that Hizbullah is “keen on pacifying the domestic political atmosphere and defusing the sectarian tensions.”

“The consensus over naming PM-designate Tammam Salam is an exceptional, positive chance that must be grabbed and boosted, because this consensus created a positive shock amid the sectarian and security tensions and political divisions,” Qaouq added.

He said that “when Hizbullah, AMAL Movement and the Free Patriotic Movement nominate PM-designate Tammam Salam, it means that we don't want to challenge anyone or eliminate anyone.”

Qaouq noted that the three political parties will have a “unified stance on everything related to the nature and mission of the new government.”

“We were positive in designation and we will be positive in formation, and we will be keen on the government's success because that is in the interest of all parties and the entire country,” he added.

Whether we believe it or not, Hezbollah is a part and parcel of the Lebanese fabric and its support from its own people is sizeable. Although at some point Hezbollah acted as if Iran comes first while Lebanon comes second, which is a mistake, I am hopeful that this attitude is now changing and Lebanon comes first while Iran remains central to them as is Saudi Arabia for M14 and the Vatican for the Christians. There’s nothing wrong in being a part of a larger scheme, what’s wrong is to put the larger scheme’s interests before yours. I hope Hezbollah finally realized that Lebanon is for them as well as all of us and that what’s best for Lebanon should be invariably the main aim of all of us.
