The committee charged with drafting a government policy statement has suggested adopting proportional representation in the next parliamentary elections.

Prominent ministerial sources told An Nahar daily in remarks published on Thursday that the committee approved on Tuesday the clause on the equation army, people, and resistance, while the political aspects of the policy statement were addressed during Wednesday’s meeting.

Soon after discussing Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s four-page draft on the issue, the discussions shifted attention to the electoral law, with a preliminary agreement being reached to adopt proportional representation.

The committee then discussed articles on ministries, administrations, and each minister’s vision of his role in his ministry.

These discussions are expected to be continued during Thursday’s meeting.

As Safir newspaper meanwhile reported on Thursday that the policy statement should be complete by the end of the week “if no surprises emerge.”
