Report: Hizbullah Official Says Assad Made Big Mistake by Using Chemical Weapons

W300

German intelligence said Tuesday that spying on a conversation between a Hizbullah member and an Iranian diplomat provided “an additional clue” that proves Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons in the August 21 attacks.

"The intelligence agency (BND) intercepted a phone conversation between a high-ranking Hizbullah member and the Iranian embassy and in which the Hizbullah official seems to admit chemicals were used,” a report by Der Spiegel magazine said.

It elaborated: “He said in the phone call that Assad lost his nerves and made a big mistake by ordering the chemical weapons attack.”

The magazine said the revelation was made during a secret briefing to select lawmakers on Monday, in which BND head Gerhard Schindler said that while there is still no incontestable proof, analysis of the evidence at hand has led his intelligence service to believe that Assad's regime is to blame.

Schindler explained that “only Assad's regime is in possession of binary chemical weapons such as sarin.”

“The BND believes that regime experts would be the only ones capable of manufacturing such weapons and deploying them with small missiles and that they were used in attacks before August 21,” the German magazine said.

It pointed out: “The telephone conversation intercepted by the BND could be an important piece in the puzzle currently being assembled by Western intelligence experts.”

Der Spiegel's report comes after U.S. President Barack Obama warned last week he was ready to launch military strikes on Assad's regime over its alleged use of chemical weapons.

Washington has accused the regime of Assad of carrying out the August 21 attack near Damascus, which U.S. officials say killed nearly 1,500 people, including hundreds of children.

i doubt anyway that anyone from HA would talk over the phone about anything, with the iranian embassy what's more, like they don't know the whole world is spying on them.

one more thing, there is an obvious lie in the german claims, that only assad has chemicals, since we all know khan al assal chemical a few months ago was done by rebels.

Missing VINCENT over 10 years

rbaker, logical thinking happens when a person reaches to a true conclusion from a given "possible premise or premises? that, if true, would support that conclusion. What I said re: "Back then you had bunch of very irate Americans wanting to take revenge of 9/11", is based on "known facts", including the state of the mind of the perpetrators at the time. My view is irrelevant, but people that knew Sadam and/or his regime would disagree with most critics regarding Sadam's connection with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, considering the deterioration of Sadam's grace with the U.S. after he lost the Iran/Iraq war and turned around to support Al-Qaeda. Another reason to invade Iraq, may be more important, was to bankrupt Sadam's wealth/purchasing power and prevent him from buying weapons from the other super power and/or manufacturers that he might use against U.S's allies in the region.

I could give you a thought of mind which also have flood the web the last couple of days. First the worrying aspect that the video was posted one day ahead of the attack. Second why the hell would he use chemical weapons in ghouta where he is making strong progress and has so for the last couple of months and not in Aleppo for example? And why the hell would he use it the weapons 3 days after the un investigation team arrived in Syria for exactly the same reason? Last but not least, Maria del ponti clearly stated that the evidence points towards the rebels subject to launching and using chemical weapons. Please at least use your brains when analyzing news on the web

Assad lost his nerve when he's winning even after his inner circle was assassinated in the first week of the Attempt at Regime Change and suddenly he decides to kill 430 women and children just as UN Inspectors arrived at a hotel 11 miles away. This article has some of the most civil and useful dialogue we ve seen in awhile.

I tried to weigh out the perspective of quo bono (who benefits?) because I agree with Mowaten that this gives the US a trump card.

However, I m not of the opinion that the Syrian regime was/is doing particularly well or they wouldn't have accepted any assistance from HA because that's almost as much of a trump card in and of itself.

If this wiretap information is true, it would fit with the developing narrative that HA is more of a hesitant partner - and more realistic than Assad - and I'm sure the party isn't pleased with the scenario because it's downhill either way they look at it. If I was HA, I would push back against Iran and cut my losses in Syria.

Default-user-icon trueself (Guest) over 10 years

Let's be frank here. No one could have used chemical weapons if he was not cornered. I for one think that Assad is realising that his end is nearing based on his assessment of how much is he still garnering the support of his men. I surmise that he's more and more seeing that his power base is eroding speedily. That's why he took the opportunity of throwing chemicals on his people. In wars, mistakes like these are futile. I think Assad's end is near.

Every man and his dog know that they are directly or indirectly involved. Fear and cowardice have reined supreme amongst all our politicians in confronting HA's crimes. And then again who are we to offer them immunity if the families of their victims and the families of the innocent bystanders demand justice.
