Miqati Chairs Security Meeting, Calls on All Lebanese Powers to Adopt Policy of Disassociation

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Monday the need for all political powers to cooperate to form a new government that would be capable of tackling several pending issues in light of the “dangerous developments in the region.”

He therefore called on all sides to “adopt the policy of disassociation from the developments in Syria and exert efforts to form a new government.”

He later chaired a security meeting to address the situation in Tripoli in light of the two bombings that took place in the northern city on August 23.

The Grand Serail meeting underscored the importance of security agencies and administrations in maintaining calm and stability in the city.

The gatherers also followed up on efforts to provide compensation to those affected by the attacks.

Miqati praised the army and security forces' efforts in preserving security and containing any individual incident that takes place in Tripoli.

The caretaker premier hoped that all sides would continue on cooperating with the security forces in order to safeguard Tripoli's security.

The meeting was attended by caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, caretaker Finance Minister Mohammed al-Safadi, caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Faisal Karami, caretaker Minister of State Ahmed Karami, MPs Robert Fadel, Samir al-Jisr, Mohammed Kabbara, Samer Saadeh, Bader Wannous, acting Internal Security Forces chief Ibrahim Basbous, head of the Civil Defense Raymond Khattar, head of the Higher Defense Council Mohammed Kheir, head of the Higher Relief Council Ibrahim Bashir, and a number of Tripoli officials.

Forty-five people were killed and over 800 wounded in a twin explosions in Tripoli on August 23.

The blasts targeted the Taqwa and al-Salam mosques as worshipers were performing weekly prayers.
