Hungary Coach Egervari Quits after Record Defeat
Hungarian national team coach Sandor Egervari resigned late Friday after his side's record 8-1 defeat away to the Netherlands in Amsterdam.
The Netherlands, who had already qualified for the 2014 World Cup, thrashed Hungary 8-1, the heaviest defeat in the country's history.
The Hungarian FA's president Sandor Csanyi confirmed in a statement early Saturday it had accepted Egervari's resignation.
The result effectively ended Hungary's chance of coming second in World Cup qualifying Group D, although a slim mathematical possibility remains with one more round to play on October 15.
The 63-year-old Egervari, who took over as head-coach in July 2010, was in charge for 34 matches, taking the team from 62nd spot in the FIFA world rankings to 30th.
