US Diplomat: STL Not Solely For Hariri … Indictment Won't Lead to Violence

A U.S. diplomatic source said the Special Tribunal for Lebanon was not just created for Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

"In the midst of the controversy over the indictment, we have forgotten that there was more than one victim," the source told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat in remarks published Monday.

Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, he said, was not the "only victim" of this crime. "There are others," the source added, pointing to Bassel Flaihan and two dozen Lebanese who were killed along with Hariri in the massive car bombing in downtown Beirut February 2005.

"The court lives in a world of justice and not in our world," he stressed.

The U.S. source said the STL was created to end an era of political assassinations in Lebanon."
