Fears for Italian Family after Peru Boat Sinks

Nine people including a four-year-old Italian boy and his parents were feared drowned when their boat capsized in northern Peru after its engine failed, officials said Monday.

Ten others were rescued and one person confirmed dead after the vessel sank in strong currents Sunday on a rain-swollen river near the town of Imaza, in Peru's Amazon region.

Rescuers were searching for the missing but poor conditions were hampering the effort, regional civil defense officials told Agence France Presse.

The sinking came after another shipwreck on January 17 on another river that left several missing or dead including a Spanish national, they said.
