Three people died and 24 were injured in a bus crash in northern Slovakia early on Saturday, rescuers said.

"Three people died, two are in a critical condition, four suffered serious injuries and 18 had light injuries," emergency service spokesman Andrej Hirjak told Agence France Presse, adding the accident had occurred around 0300 GMT.

Two casualties were from the Czech Republic, where the bus was registered, and one was Ukrainian, Slovak interior ministry spokesman Ivan Netik told the Czech news agency CTK.

Slovak media said the bus carrying about 40 passengers on a regular route from Prague to Uzhgorod in Ukraine hit a post by the motorway near the small town of Spissky Stvrtok as fresh snow had covered the road.
