Shehayyeb on Waste Plan: In the End, Government Must Find Solution

Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb stressed on Friday that the trash crisis must be solved and that the “state must find a solution in the end,” in light of the stances of activists and municipalities rejecting the minister's waste management plan proposal that was agreed by the government.
“The government must find a solution in the end. I have worked with the committee tasked on this plan to set ecological and scientific plans to be implemented as quick as possible,” said Shehayyeb in an interview to the An Nahar daily.
“The plan was presented to the organizations and the municipalities' union and it will be discussed with all parties rejecting the proposal," he stated.
He stressed that the Naameh landfill will not reopen until all the other suggested landfills do as well “everybody must be part of the solution, no one shall carry the burden alone."
On the other hand, sources close to PM Tammam Salam stressed the necessity to implement the administrative decision on the ground saying: “Implementing the plan is the responsibility of the related administrative and security authorities,” al-Joumhouria daily reported.
“Applying the stages as approved in the plan are not random but are the result of a consultation process with the civil committees, experts and representatives of concerned groups and those that claimed responsibility in the civil activities.”
The government approved in a marathon session late Wednesday, a waste management plan proposed by Shehayyeb.
The plan calls for reopening the Naameh landfill, which was closed in mid-July, for seven days to dump the garbage that accumulated in random sites in Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
It also envisions converting two existing dumps, in the northern Akkar area of Srar and the eastern border area of al-Masnaa, into sanitary landfills capable of receiving trash for more than a year.
Activists, municipalities and residents rejected the decision and took to the street in the northern region of Akkar to condemn the government's decision.

Yes and what is funnier is that solution is in having all our Politicians resign (Ministers and PMs), leave the country, so that educated, non-sectarian and young leaders will take their place.

I am the_roar: I am a regular poster on naharnet. I have 51 fake accounts and I live on this forum 24/7. I make fake accounts and insult people when I have no argument or debate. I am a Shia who pretends not to speak Arabic and claims to live in Australia. I know every street in Lebanon and every MP's name despite my claim that I am 3rd generation Australian and having never been to Lebanon. I tell people I don't post on weekends to give them the impression I have a life. I lie and lie and lie and think people believe me. I love to see my comments in the top rated section so people think I am important.

the_roar, mowaten, younis, giveittoyou, and I are the 5 most informative posters on naharnet by 5 country miles. No wonder our comments are always in the VIP section of the top rated comments. No wonder..

When your government cannot do some thing as basic as providing 24/24 electricity without screwing everything up due to corruption, theft and stupidity it is clear that your government has to be toppled . Maybe the foreign benefactors of certain politicians can give them amnesty abroad . Aoun could go to France again for instance, Nassrallah already has amnesty in some of Iran's finest religious schools. Anyway don't worry about them , they will do just fine. Young people and activists will have to bleed. You are lucky that you don't have a military state within a state like Iran and North Korea so you can depose your government without having a military dictator take over but Israel will attack Hezbollah and send you back to the Stone Age when people didn't have electricity back then. Huumm,.., you really are between a rock and a very hard place.
Excellent post JCA/JCW, thanks.

Dear ministers and PM's I have a quick solution regarding trash crisis. Ship it to the countries that previously offered to take it @ approximately 80$ a ton as a short term solution and after that you can work on a long term solution. This way we are not poisoning our land and water resources and we are sending the garbage away from Lebanon. I know it cuts into the commissions and rampant corruption, but for once take a decision that is for the benefit of the people and not Swiss bank accounts.

but
milk is not always white
the sky is not always blue
coffee is not always black
barbie is not just a doll
orange is the new yellow

Dear Ministers and MP's I have another solution regarding electricity, let the owner of zahle electricity run EDL for a period of one year and see if he can provide electricity 24/7 as he said he can at a fraction of the cost. I know it cuts into the commissions and rampant corruption, but for once take a decision that benefits the Lebanese people and not the Swiss bank accounts. The Swiss after all don't need us, they don't have garbage in their streets or rolling blackouts.

but is it renewable?????

perhaps if you turn the lights off on your tree we will not have rolling blackouts.

Dear Bassil :)renewable energy is no small word, the technology is still not cost effective and in its infancy, and countries with 24/7 electricity and massive economies cannot achieve more than 10 to 12 % renewable energy. I suggest we get 24/7 first make it productive and then focus on renewable energy with the profits made, at the moment we are focusing on running up and down the stairs to reset the switch everytime we go over 5 ampers. :(

dear cedars2 :)
I promise you from Libanon OFF to Libanon ON in the fall of 2115.

I know that to the ruling class I sound like an alien from outer space that recently landed in lebanon, but I belong to the 90% that doesn't own dual generators when there is a power cut to power up my palaces, I don't have the luxury of sending my kids abroad either so security and infrastructure and mounting bills are a concern, plus the fact that I am paying for these side perks such as palaces and dual generators. Kindly step aside gentlemen it is time for the young educated generation to take over.
The article says, "In the End, Government Must Find Solution". This is the whole problem, from the beginning the government should have found solutions a very long time ago. Mr. Shehayeb has moved matters because he knows what he saw taking shape in the streets, and it won't go anytime soon, until this country is turned upside down, till everyone of these crooks leaves power, it's a lot more than the trash issue, it's about a clique that was sharing everything in this country and by this I mean M8 and M14, honesty is a word that doesn't exist in their book of rules.
I think the trash crisis should wait for Bassil's plan. He is promising to give us 24/24 renewable trash
