Teachers’ Syndicate Suspends Correction of Official Exams

The Syndicate Coordination Committee announced on Friday that it suspended the correction of official exams to protest the cabinet’s failure to include the new salary scale in the 2012 state budget.

“We have suspended all the works related to the official exams unless the new wage scale is issued by Tuesday,” the committee said in a press conference.

The teachers will hold a sit-in on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. near the ministry of education and state institutions.

A delegation from the committee is also expected to meet with the authority tasked with studying the new salaries scale on Monday to stress their demands.

Economy and Trade Minister Nicolas Nahhas said the teachers’ new wage scale is not linked to the state’s budget and requires a separate, detailed and fair study.

On Wednesday, the cabinet issued the 2012 state budget but failed to include the teachers’ demands for better wages.

Teachers are demanding to benefit from the salaries hike, which was approved by the cabinet in January, and have continuously warned that they will not correct the official exams for grades 9 and 12.
