Report: March 8 Mulling to Replace Miqati with Another Personality

The March 8 forces led by Hizbullah are mulling to replace Premier-designate Najib Miqati with another personality, al-Liwaa newspaper reported Wednesday.

Sources told the daily that mainly Hizbullah and Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun are planning to find a candidate for the premiership who is neither a March 14 foe nor unwanted by March 8.

The sources refused to say whether they were mulling to nominate former Minister Mohammed Safadi or any other Sunni politician.

But Miqati told his visitors on Tuesday that he would not give up his task of forming the cabinet despite the difficulties.

Sources close to him also denied that the premier-designate had traveled “anywhere since his nomination.”

The denial came in response to Aoun’s accusation that Miqati had traveled to London.

The problem with Miqati is that he is suseptable to US pressure since has vast business interests especially in the West, which are exposed to a US asset freeze in the event that a government he forms is one sided toward Hezbollah.

Hezbollah therefore wants to get out of the Miqati business and find another Sunni candidate. The problem is that beyond Miqati, there are no credible substitutes given the overwhelming power of the Hariri clan in Sunni political circles. Without a credible Sunni, the resultant government would expose Hezbollah more than Hezbollah wishes to be exposed. It wants to be behind the curtains of a strong Sunni and Aoun. With a weak Sunni, this leaves only Aoun to serve as cover and he is as transparant as the last veil to drop from around a stripper's waist.

Still, with the STL indictments coming very soon, given the choice of a weak government or no government to execute the arrest warrants, Hezbollah would take a weak government, rather than exposure.

M8 has the majority popular vote without Junblat, Miqati, or Safadi. M14 ruled for years without the majority Shia support, and M14 can rule without the majority Sunni vote. Aoun is more important to M8 than Miqati, Safadi, or Junblat.
