Airport Customs Foil Bid to Smuggle Drugs from Brazil into Lebanon

Customs officers at the Rafik Hariri International Airport on Thursday thwarted an attempt to smuggle a quantity of drugs into the country.

A Lebanese man who arrived from Brazil via Qatar raised the suspicions of customs officers, state-run National News Agency reported.

"When they examined his travel suitcase, they discovered 7.5 kilograms of cocaine that were hidden in the suitcase in a 'creative' way,” NNA said.

The 27-year-old man identified as H. Sh. was arrested after customs officials received the authorization of the relevant judicial authorities, NNA added.

He was referred to the central anti-drug bureau in Beirut for further interrogation.

On March 7, airport security thwarted attempts to smuggle counterfeit Saudi Riyals and narcotic pills from Lebanon to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
