Rangers Appoint New Interim Chief Executive

Scottish football giants Rangers have appointed Craig Mather as interim chief executive after the resignation of Charles Green, they said on Wednesday.

The Glasgow club said that Mather, a shareholder and director of sports development since last October, would hold the position until a permanent replacement for Green was found.

"Rangers announces that the Board has appointed Craig Mather, aged 42, to the role of Chief Operating Officer for the Group," Rangers said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

"In the meanwhile, the search for a permanent replacement for Charles Green will continue and a further announcement will be made as appropriate."

Green's consortium bought Rangers for £5.5 million ($8.4 million, 6.4 million euros)last year after the club went into liquidation.

He stepped down after claims by former owner Craig Whyte, who was in charge when administrators were called in to the Ibrox club, that he was involved in Green's bid.

Green has denied any wrongdoing but said he resigned because of the potential harm to the club from negative publicity surrounding Whyte's claims.

The former chief executive was previously forced to apologise after being criticised for making allegedly racist remarks about a business associate.

Rangers, winners of the Scottish league title 54 times, were demoted to the country's fourth tier after going into administration.

They won the Third Division this season.
